The Nuggets' massive new scoreboard will blow your mind

The new scoreboard in Denver's Pepsi Center, home to the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche, is going to be the envy of indoor arenas everywhere. Assuming indoor arenas feel envy.

The massive new screen is the largest in the NBA/NHL, and the size of it is almost hard to comprehend.

From the Nuggets website (emphasis ours):

The scoreboard will broadcast in a true 16:9 aspect ratio at 1080p HD and boasts a surface area of more than 4,400 square feet, making it the largest in the NBA or NHL. The length spans 3-point line to 3-point line for basketball and blue line to blue line for hockey.

OK, all the stuff about 1080p HD and aspect ratio -- cool. I've never known what any of that means and I most likely never will.

But 3-point line to 3-point line? That I understand. That is monstrous. That is too big a screen.

The video below shows a time-lapse video of the new scoreboard being put together. The entire project took two years from conception to installation.

(That song in the video is pretty good, no?)

Here's the real question about all this: Were the old Jumbotrons too small? I don't think I've ever heard someone complain, in an NBA or NHL arena, that the Jumbotron was too small.

The last thing we need now is an arms race in stadium-screen sizes. Cowboys won football. NHL and NBA? Concede to Denver. Let's stop the madness right here.
